Germany, November 1938. Hitler and his Nazis launch the pogrom that will be known as Kristallnacht. Herman watches in horror as his cousin and a friend are arrested by the SA. As a Jew, he realizes it is past time to flee his homeland, a decision that catapults him from one adventure to another, his life changed forever by the maelstrom of world events. Part coming-of-age story, part immigrant tale, part World War II adventure, Immigrant Soldier, The Story of a Ritchie Boy closely follows a true story. The novel follows Herman as he evolves from a frightened and frustrated teenager looking for a place to belong into a confident and caring US Army Intelligence officer serving in Patton’s Third Army. The hero experiences fear, romance, loyalty, disappointment, friendship, horror, and compassion in his quest for an understanding of hate and forgiveness.

My Dad was also a Ritchie Boy, so I was interested in the information that the author had on the Camp itself and the training the men went through. Dad died when I was 16 (now 65 ) and I had many unanswered questions. Another great reference for those interested in the Ritchie boys is the wonderful documentary done in 2004. After Camp Ritchie training, my dad interrogated high ranking Nazi's at the recently revealed top secret facility,P.O. Box 1142, outside of D.C. He spoke five languages and came to U.S. with a degree in International Law from the University of Vienna. The Ritchie boys were an incredibly intelligent group of men, with a desire to do whatever they could to help the U.S. win the war. I enjoyed this story and found the author's uncle's life fascinating. Thank you for writing this book and helping to shed more light on the Ritchie Boys!

Interesting read. Ritchie Boys (WW II) intelligence servicemen who made a significant contribution to defeating the Nazis. Another good read is “Sons and Soldiers” by Bruce Henderson.
I was hooked very quickly by the story of Herman and his family. I loved the perspective of living through the stages of the war and how it was to be considered an outcast by your own country and people you once called friends. The twists and turns that this one man's life took were both amazing and surprising. To think that at one moment in life it appears that you may parish and then the next turn opportunities abound. Wonderfully told story.
A well researched and written human interest story about the horrific fear of pre-WWII German Jews. And
a story about how a poor young man escapes the country and through self preservation and ambition, rises
through the ranks as an American soldier, to become respected and successful as a highly positioned
aide to General Patton and his 3rd Army. Nice side stories about young love, and family members of
the young hero.
Yes. This is the first book I have read from the Jewish people point of view in Nazi Germany as Hitler's plan to eliminate them became law. The incredible constant fear that they had to live with was palpable in this book. I think the author did a very good job with that. I thought that this special unit did more with covert undercover work and spying on the Nazis then the book conveys. But this was one man's fictionalized story of the Ritchie Boys. All in all a very good book.
What a great story and an important one for us to remember. It is a true story written like a novel and the author does a great job filling in the spaces and gaps where she didn't know details.
This was a wonderful account of a man that truly served his country to the utmost. Kathryn did a great job of research and interviewing to produce this book. Added to that she gave her uncle a third dimension while writing. Made for an enjoyable read. I thank her for the story, and her uncle for sharing his experience.
I really enjoyed this novel by Kathryn Lang-Slattery. I discovered it because it was a recent winner in the Independent Publisher Book Awards. The book felt a lot like a memoir, actually, because the narrative is inspired by the life of the author’s uncle. Knowing much of what was being described really took place made the story more appealing to me.

I particularly liked learning about the Ritchie Boys, many of whom were recent German-speaking immigrants to the U.S. who served in the U.S. Army during WWII as translators and in military intelligence. The book contains many interesting and poignant moments, such as during the Battle of the Bulge, when some American troops didn’t know if these German-American Ritchie Boys might be Wehrmacht soldiers impersonating Americans. Also – the protagonist’s conflicted feelings upon returning to his homeland and dealing with former Nazis – the same folks who persecuted his Jewish family prior to the war.

This book is a fast-paced read that will educate all who read it. It would be an excellent choice for a book club.
